Welcome now to this, our page of events during 2005.
This will hopefully build into a fine record of our group events during the year.
February Meeting
Here we had two speakers on a subject of unusual importance, probably to all of us (without exception?)
Julia Wilding and Cindy of the solicitor's company Dixon, Coles & Gill spoke to us at length on the very complex
subject of Wills, Trusts and Probate. Among other items / subjects covered was Enduring
Powers of Attorney, Intestacy and Inheritance Tax.
They covered all of these subjects in quite a lot of detail, for instance the differing routes that your estate could take upon
death depending on whether you had made a will or died "intestate". How the law could affect your
property, possibly contrary to your wishes and intent if you failed to draw your document up correctly.
For instance a short "scribbled note" might not be legally enforceable!
Appointment of executor/s and the options that arise from that, ages of inheritance (if ever), are trust funds appropriate,
appointment of trustees, who is eligable / ineligable, tax rates of inheritance tax, possible ways to reduce liability.
The possibility of falling liable to The Inheritance Dependency Act, all this and so very much more
was discussed in more than reasonable detail.
These speakers were very happy to answer our questions in full with a lot of detail. Naturally they were
also keen to promote their company, but despite that, they were very genuinely helpful and invited enquirers to their Wakefield
or Horbury offices. To save anyone from looking them up, these are 01924 373467 and 01924 263166 respectively.
A genuinely informative and useful evening, one from which we all learned a lot of useful information.
The sole disappointment being that so few members turned up - just 10 or so. Or do we already know such a lot?
